Comfort Painting

I have been struggling in the studio recently, while trying to complete a new series of collages for a fundraiser. I have tried to make meaningful collages, which I decided probably wouldn't sell to anyone but me. Then I tried to make cheerful, colorful collages, which totally did not work for me. So I gave up (temporarily) and got my watercolors out. I painted the ocean that is my new blog header.

Then I decided that my fundraiser collages should be created in the style that I have been working recently, and they could either sell or not, but I would at least enjoy making them. Happily, I have a series of 10 collages drying in the book press, with the first layers on them. I am excited about them, and I should have done this weeks ago!

Wow, your new ocean header is fantastic. I thought it was a photo.

Your ocean header looks like a photograph. I am sure that whatever you come up for the fundraiser - it will be great!

For whatever reason, I have struggled with these collages for the ONE fundraiser. I think mostly because I was concentrating on what I thought would sell and raise more money, rather than putting my heart into the work and making what I want. Once I realized that, the first layer was a breeze, and I am excited to get them out of the press this morning and add more layers.

The watercolor is 30" wide, and I love how it looks when it is shrunk to the size of my blog header! I have been painting oceans and seagulls recently. I think I'm ready for a warm vacation to get away from the cold and snow and ice here. We are supposed to get more snow dumped on us this week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my son makes it home for Christmas.

In my opinion, following our heart always produces better art than making art strictly to sell! Glad you listened to your heart! I am looking forward to seeing what you make for this fundraiser.
