On The Design Wall

This is today's view of the design wall. This is a piece in the beginning stages for an exhibition called "Altered Views". The background squares are hand dyed cotton, and the images are screened from a photograph I took. Any ideas on what the original image is?

An antique hand crank sewing machine?

Excellent guess! It is indeed a Singer Model 20 hand crank sewing machine --- one of the older Singer machines that I own. I'm glad to know that the image is still recognizable as I didn't want to totally destroy it, just alter it a bit.

my guess was going to be either a sewing machine or a antique meat grinder.

are the fabrics dyed with natural dyes?

Ohhh, an antique meat grinder would have been fun, too! The fabrics are dyed with procion dyes. They were done before my current fascination with natural dyes, although the same colors are possible with the natural dyes.
